The Restaurant Guide for Wine Lovers

The Marksman

We assessed The Marksman in June 2026 and this review is based on the food menu and wine list at the time of the review. As menus and wine lists change, we name styles in order for the information to remain more useful as menus change. If things have slipped you can use the Vinealto Dining app including accessing an up to date reading using 'At the Table' from the wine list in front of you in the restaurant. How we assess

The Marksman is a Michelin-recognised Hackney Road pub cooking serious nose-to-tail British food beneath a genuine low-intervention wine cellar. The wine programme achieves real mutual elevation. Its high-acid, low-oak reds and natural whites are exactly what offal, roast meat and the harder vegetable plates want, with a mature cellar tier and grower Champagne behind the everyday list. It will most reward the curious drinker who likes natural wine and good pub cooking in the same room, and who is happy to follow a knowledgeable floor team.

The full assessment of the wine programme, the pairings and how to get the best experience is for members. Make a free account to read five full entries.

Sael

London, London

Modern British Great British Brasserie

Sael is a Great British Brasserie on St James's Market serving seasonal British produce from the raw bar, the pie oven and the embers at a premium central-London address. The wine programme is one of the city's most ambitious and most accessible big lists (global in reach, deeply committed to home-grown English wine, with a sake section and serving formats from the single-figure glass to the pint to fine-wine Coravin pours), and it flatters the British cooking rather than overshadowing it. It will most reward a wine lover who wants range and discovery with proper brasserie food and likes to drink widely by the glass.
