We assessed Middletons Steakhouse and Grill in July 2026 from the menu and wine list as they stood then. Dishes and bottles move on; how to drink well here changes far more slowly. Middletons Steakhouse and Grill is a national grill-house group with a standardised, varietal-led wine list built to be safe, food-friendly and accessible. The wine programme does its core job well (a good by-the-glass red for a steak at fair value) but stays shallow, with no off-dry white for the spiced plates, no dessert or fortified wine and no printed pairings. It will most reward the diner who wants a straightforward glass of Malbec or Shiraz with their steak, rather than one looking for range or discovery.

Japanese sushi and robata

Sticks'n'Sushi is the Cambridge outpost of the Danish-Japanese sushi-and-robata group, with a drinks list far more serious than the format suggests: a broad aromatic wine selection and a deep, properly-curated sake programme, most of it by the glass. The wine-and-sake offer is genuinely matched to the food (bone-dry whites and dry sake for the raw fish, sparkling and low-alcohol styles for the chilli heat, plum sake to finish) and communicated with real care, held back only by chain-standard buying and an across-the-board absence of vintages. It will most reward the curious drinker who wants to explore sake and aromatic white a glass at a time alongside the sushi and sticks.
